In 2009, BIG4 Holiday Park Bellarine, located at Marcus Hill, engaged Diston Wastewater during the development of its new holiday park. Diston designed a custom wastewater solution to meet the specific needs of the park, including the stormwater retention wetland system, sewage treatment system and effluent reuse system, liaising with the relevant approval authorities, including the EPA for the Works Approval and the City of Greater Geelong for Council planning and building permit requirements.
Diston designed a custom Sewage Treatment plant and obtained Works Approval through EPA. Diston, manufactured, installed the continued to maintain the treatment plant. After more than 15 years of operation, the sewage treatment plant was still operating reliably and efficiently, reflecting the strength of the original design, the quality of the installation and the value of ongoing maintenance.
In 2023, Barwon Water brought sewer infrastructure within reach of the holiday park. Connecting the site to the sewer network became the best long-term wastewater management option.
Rather than simply removing and disposing of the existing sewage treatment plant, Diston developed a practical engineering solution that reused key parts of the original system. Some existing components were repurposed to be the new pumping station, supporting the sewer connection and rising main arrangement, with greater than standard flood storage.
This custom design with additional storage provides greater operational resilience for the park. In the event of a power outage or temporary disruption, the site had extra buffer capacity, reducing the likelihood of urgent pump-outs or interruption to park operations.
Other remaining components were recovered and reused on another project, reducing waste and further extending the value of the original infrastructure.
The result was a cost-effective and environmentally responsible outcome. Disposal costs were reduced, existing infrastructure was put to practical use, and the client benefited from Diston’s long-term knowledge of the site.
The BIG4 Holiday Park Bellarine project demonstrates Diston Wastewater’s broad capability in commercial wastewater infrastructure, including sewage treatment plant design, stormwater retention wetland design, effluent reuse systems, EPA Works Approval support, wastewater system maintenance, sewer connection planning, pump station integration, flood storage and rising main design and installation.
