The memorial was built as a memorial to the men from Eltham shire who died in World War I, it was unveiled on 11 November 1926 by the Governor-General, Lord Stonehaven.

The Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Tower is built on the highest hill in the district. It was unveiled on 11 November 1926 and is used as a fire spotting tower in summer.

Diston Wastewater Technology installed a small domestic system and irrigation system to cater for the caretaker’s reidence.
