The memorial was built as a memorial to the men from Eltham shire who died in World War I, it was unveiled on 11 November 1926 by the Governor General, Lord Stonehaven. The Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Tower is built on the highest hill in the district.  It is used as a fire spotting tower in summer. Diston Wastewater Technology installed a small domestic system and irrigation system to cater for the caretaker’s residence.
